How do I record and create MP3s from home?

There used to be no substitution for a good recording job done in a professional recording studio. Now with the rising popularity of digital PC recording and the low cost of recording software, many people are re-thinking the idea of home recording. Plus with the ease of MP3 distribution, and the many sites that offer free web hosting and the ability to upload and download free music, the difficulty of promoting and distributing your bands MP3s has been made very easy. The questions at hand are, what do I need to begin recording at home, how do I turn my recordings into MP3s, and what do I do with said MP3s after I am done creating them?

Home recording on a PC requires just a couple of things; a computer, recording software (i.e. Pro Tools, Cakewalk, Cubase), and a digital soundcard. If you will be recording multiple tracks from multiple sources at the same time, you might want to invest in a mixer as well. (This is assuming that your sound card only has one audio input) This will allow you input more than one instrument/microphone to your computer at the same time. Install your recording software and sound card drivers. Plug your mixer into your sound card, plug your instruments into your mixer and youre ready to begin recording. The recording process may be a little different depending on what software you are using, but most decent software comes with a good instruction manual which you can consult if you are having problems. After recording, you will want to mix all tracks down to a stereo audio .wav file.

Now that we have our recording done and our .wav file in hand, well want to convert it to an MP3 file. If you will be burning your tracks to CD, you wont need to convert it to an MP3 file. But for distribution for music downloads on the web, the smallest, best quality, most universally accepted format will be an MP3 file. You can take your .wav file and export it as an MP3 through whatever audio recording program you use. Most recording software offers that option, but keep in mind that you might need to mess with the output settings to get the best quality MP3 out of your program. Another option is to use a stand-alone .wav to MP3 converter. If you go to download.com and search for .wav to .mp3 converter, you will be presented with a good list of programs that do just that. I have had good results using both methods, so its really up to you.

Once you have your MP3 files, you can set-up your own website and offer free music downloads. Or you can go to one of the many sites that offer free web hosting for musicians, so that the musicians will have a place to offer downloadable music MP3s, music videos, and music lyrics. Sites like, DiskFaktory Jams and Section Z are both free and have other tools for musicians to access, like message board forums and internet radio stations. Once you have your recording done, the possibilities are endless!

Famous Fender Stratocaster History

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 8:07 am

Fender Stratocaster history begins with the man some people call the king of surf music. Dick Dale is the man who some believe invented surf music as early as the 1950′s. No, it wasn’t the Beach Boys. It was Dick Dale.

He had the musical assistance of Leo Fender, inventor of the Fender Stratocaster. Part of early Fender Stratocaster history includes the story of Leo Fender’s gift to Dick Dale of a Fender Stratocaster to use in his live performances. He wanted Dick to try the Fender Stratocaster – and the rest is history, as the saying goes.

Did he try that guitar! The Fender Stratocaster history at that point was one of taking abuse and living through it, as Dale beat that guitar, hurling loud raucous music into the night, and destroying forty nine different amps until one actually caught on fire. Stratocaster history that night including the entertaining Dick Dale using the right handed guitar for left-handed play, playing upside down and created all new sounds.

Leo, Freddy Fender and Dale joined forces to find new, more tolerable speakers and this was the beginning of heavy metal Fender Stratocaster. They approached a company that made speakers and asked that they design a fifteen-inch Fender Stratocaster speaker. This made Fender Stratocaster speaker history.
Fender history included the fact that Dick Dale became the first person to take the quiet guitar player image and transform her or him into a loud heavy metal entertainer.

Included in this portion of Fender history was Guitar Player Magazine, who as a result now referred to Dick Dale as the father of heavy metal. Stratocaster history, then, is about the transition from quiet soothing singalong surf music to the heavy metal sound of the sixties.

What you need to know about environmental threats

Greek philosophers commenced theorizing about the nature as composed of elements like water, earth, ether etc. This nature or environment has always been a jamboree for the inquisitive souls. This is precisely the reason that man has left no stone unturned to explore it. In talking about nature and environment related issues, the foremost question that comes to my mind is that what is environment? Have you ever pondered over the fact that it is not just the foliage and fauna but also the air you breathe, water you drink, things you touch and perceive and even the food you eat that constitutes your environment! You are encased by environment everywhere and anywhere. This environment has friends as well as foes. In case of opponents, the rational selves inject most of these. For instance factories produce and introduce many toxic compounds in the environment that are hazardous for the entire mankind. This article will shed light on some of the significant environmental enemies that envelope us all round the clock.

1.The harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide, lead, sulphur dioxide etc constantly pollute the air around us. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous compound, excess inhaling of which can be unexpectedly detrimental. Studies have revealed that CO enters into our bloodstream and causes breathing disorders and even cardiac arrest.

2.Lead is another fatal element that attacks the nervous system and is largely responsible for causing evils like anemia and high blood pressure. Lead can be threatening to life. So it is better to keep a check on the release of lead in your surroundings. Reducing the consumption can do this and judicious use of lead based products and like paints, batteries and radiators etc.

Other pollutants too that enter the air and water we consume and destroy the sanctity of environment (like depletion of the ozone layer) are very dreadful. They can result in usual minor problems like common cold to major ones like asthma, bronchitis and conjunctivitis etc.

In order to avert the infection due to these pollutants or germs it is better to built up a strong immune system. Although much of immunity is genetically inherited yet it can be significantly improved by intaking nutritious and balanced diet and exercising regularly.

3.When we talk about pollution, noise pollution is also quite disturbing and annoying. A surge in the noise pollution level due to the escalating traffic, industries and factories leads to hazards like insomnia and lack of concentration.

4.The sun that enlightens the whole world can even be damaging at times. The excess of suns heat and ultraviolet rays that creep into the earths atmosphere due to the exhaustion of protective ozone layer, cause many dermdisorders amongst individuals. To avoid these perils as much possible, wear sunscreen lotion, sunglasses and covered clothes while moving out in the sun.

5.Apart from the pollutants like smoke and other toxic gasses, the pesticides that are sprayed in the fields and on the crops have an injurious outcome. Through the vegetables and fruits we eat these pesticides composed of poisonous chemicals like DDT, Methanol, carbon monoxide etc. enter our body and harm it. Therefore it is advised to wash the fruits and vegetables thoroughly prior to eating or cooking.

6.The radiations that are released in the atmosphere due to nuclear reactions, nuclear tests, mobile phones, computers and the like are also a source of danger.

7.The enhancement of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has resulted in global warming which has turned out to be a massive threat to life on earth. Planting more trees and plants that enrich the air with oxygen can prevent global warming.

Safeguarding oneself against the environmental rivals is also a way to cease the damage we do the environment…think about it.

Clutterbugs

“This house is so cluttered I can’t find anything,” said my husband.

I looked around, and realized that most of the clutter was his, on that particular day, anyway. He seemed to be oblivious to that fact. He’s not only a closet packrat, he builds guitars. He rebuilds guitars- guitars that don’t quite meet his specifications when he buys them. Our living room is a guitar parts morgue. We could open up a store… They ought to make tables that have a slight angle to them, because every flat surface in our house gets piled with guitar parts, newspapers, mail, art supplies, telephones (yes we have several that don’t even work, but “might be salvageable”), and all the equipment that goes along with the guitar building and playing. His “workroom” has a tendency to overflow into the living areas. He said, just the other day, that he wanted to use the other bedroom to “store” stuff, too. I had to make a decision, to blatantly show him that most of the clutter is his, or keep quiet and put all his things away in his used-to-be-a-bedroom “workroom”. He surely would complain then, because it would be “put up.” We can’t ever find things that are “put up.” We “put it up” so well, that it’s never to be seen again. Might as well go buy another one, for all the good it’s gonna’ do us looking for it.

The trouble is, I think, we have too much stuff. If someone came by today and asked us to take up our cross and follow Christ (or Yeshua), we wouldn’t be able to find it. The Spring cleaning bug has died, too. It comes around once a year around March. Things get spruced up and “put up” and then it slowly fades away, back to the way it was. Little baskets I put around to hide the parts, and pocket contents he dumps out when he comes home are filled to the brim with all kinds of things- gloves, dog leashes, papers, and one even has an amplifier balanced on top of it.

Dust is another problem. We live in the Southwest, where rain is as scarce as change from a vending machine. Lots of dust causes lots of static electricity, which in turn causes computer freeze-ups and malfunctions. With both of us being avowed computer geeks, that certainly is a problem. We are frequently unplugging everything and plugging it back in to release the charge. I even bought some anti-static spray the other day, but alas, it is lost, after just one use. We live in Colorado, but you’d think I was back in West Texas with all the dust that seems to creep in here. I work at home, so my husband thinks I have all day to just go around and dust, and find things. He has no idea… Well, occasionally I do the chores, but anything that needs dusting that’s more than five feet high, isn’t going to get dusted. If I can’t see it, it isn’t there. It doesn’t bother me, as long as I can’t see it.

Maybe I’ll start building pianos. They have lots of parts. And they’re really big. Nah. They have a flat surface on top. I’d never be able to get into them to work on them. Besides, I’d never get anything else done, just playing the piano all day…

Should I Hire A Caterer

So you have decided to throw a party. Great, now its time to consider all of the things you must do to make it a success. You need to make a guest list, plan decorations, arrange for a DJ, etc, etc. The list goes on and on but one of the most important tasks is arranging for the food. Food and drink will make or break your party. The question you must decide is are you going to hire a caterer or are you going to handle the food yourself. There are pluses and minuses to both.

Catering Yourself
If you decide to cater the party yourself, you will of course save money. Caterers can be expensive and they make up a considerable portion of a parties budget. If you are having a relatively small gathering, it is probably not worth hiring one. You might be better off just buying a few party trays from your grocery store or a favorite restaurant.
Another reason to not hire a caterer is that you will be able to serve exactly what you want, not just what the caterer has to offer. You can have the exact foods that you and your guests like in the amounts that you want.

Hiring A Caterer
Hiring a caterer does have advantages however. Sure they can cost you money but their expertise can come in handy. If you order the food yourself you might over order, wasting money. Even worse you could end up ordering too little and run out of food or drink. That would be a party nightmare, quickly putting an end to the festivities. You want to see a crowded room empty quick, just tell your guests that there is no more food or drink.

Another advantage of hiring a caterer is that it will allow you to completely enjoy your party. No running back and forth to the kitchen or checking to make sure your appetizer tray is full. You can spend your time mingling with your friends or business associates. What good is throwing a party that you cannot enjoy.

Lastly, honestly answer this question. Do you have the expertise to pull it off? Caterers have the experience necessary to make sure that your party goes off smoothly. The food will be ready on time. The drinks will flow smoothly. They have thrown hundreds or even thousands of parties and they will make yours run like clockwork.

Hopefully this article has helped you decide on the direction you want to take your party. Decide carefully, it is an important decision that could make or break your event.

People With Disabilities Help Troops Stay Prepared

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 2:04 pm

Turn on the news and you’ll hear the valiant stories of troops in the U.S. military. And helping to support the troops are many other courageous patriots, in particular the people with severe disabilities who help keep servicemen and women equipped with the supplies they need.

Many of the products that help protect U.S. troops are produced by more than 45,000 people who are blind or have other severe disabilities working through the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Program. Also known as the JWOD Program, it is the largest single source of employment for people with disabilities, providing them with the job skills and training necessary to earn equitable wages, benefits and greater independence.

The JWOD Program, administered by the Committee for Purchase From People Who Are Blind or Severely Disabled, the federal agency that oversees the program, with assistance from NISH-Creating Employment Opportunities for People with Severe Disabilities and National Industries for the Blind, is designed to help reduce the nearly 70 percent unemployment rate among people who are blind or have severe disabilities. The program stems from the Wagner-O’Day Act passed in 1938 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which allowed agencies serving people who are blind to sell products to the federal government.

In 1971, under the leadership of Sen. Jacob Javits, Congress amended the Wagner-O’Day Act to allow people with severe disabilities to participate in the program. It also allowed agencies in the JWOD Program to provide services as well as products to the federal government.

NISH works with more than 600 nonprofit agencies to provide employment to people with disabilities. The following are some of the critical supplies produced through the JWOD Program.

* Chemical protective garments used to shield soldiers from biochemical weapons.

* Military clothing, including the new Army Combat Uniform, fleece jackets, camouflage fatigue trousers, overalls and dress slacks for the Navy and Air Force.

* Individual first-aid kits. The Marines worked closely with a JWOD-affiliated agency on the design and development of a first-aid kit pouch to increase the speed with which soldiers can administer aid to others or to themselves.

* Bandages. Millions of bandages in 14 sizes are produced each year for the armed services.

iPod Movies – A Cinema In Your Hands

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 9:05 am

Did you ever see that movie with Sir Anthony Hopkins when he was a primatologist and he was doing work out in the jungle when he befriended a group of silverbacks? Well, what happens is that these bastard gorilla poachers come by and attack the group. What do you know but, the gorillas and Hopkins(!) fight back and kill a couple of the poachers. He goes to an insane asylum and the great silverback goes to the zoo. Mind you, this thing was fierce and desired freedom more than any star and stripe waving, apple pie eating red-stater could even fathom. But, once hes in the zoo for so long, when they finally open his cage, hes too broken to attempt to walk out. Well, thats like me. Blinking is sometimes too much effort.

But, just today I ran across something that has put the glimmer back in my eye. If you like movies and you ave an ipod photo, then lets talk. Ipod movies are now within the reach of us serfs and peasants, albeit with a little work. Because, the fact of the matter is, ipod movies are not in the realm of ipod photo, no, basically its for photos. But some tenacity and a desire to watch oddly paced, effort draining clips and youve got yourself a movie night.

Youll need to get yourself set up with quicktime pro, itunes and your ipod, of course. Now youre going to take your movie, I would probably start with something short, like those clips you download from the internet. Get it in your computer and export the clip. Put the sound in your itunes, and then (heres the great part) put all the thousands of individual frames in your ipod photo. Now you get the volume rolling and use the click wheel to scroll through all the framesand you are watching ipod movies my friend. Technology is beautiful, take advantage, man, take advantage.

Managing Your Fears As An Alternative To Abuse And Addiction

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:02 am

Everybody deals with stress and anxiety, however some people sometimes take it out on others through abuse or take their fears out on themselves through addiction. Both of these alternatives are wrong. There is a better way to deal with your stress and anxieties. Here is a list of techniques that a person can use to help manage their stress, anxieties, and fears.

First and foremost, seek help and treatment from a professional. Getting help from a counselor or other professional is very important and can provide you much help and insights in dealing with your current problem. Getting help from a professional should be the first thing you do in getting better. Remember to follow through on the suggestions that these counselors offer to you and be patient with the process of getting better.

Try to learn what is the real source of your fears and anxieties. Knowing what the source of your problem is can go a long way in finding the solution. Think about it and try to figure out what is the source of your fears and stress. If you do not know, then ask a professional or a counselor. As a Layman, I learned that finding the source of your fears will put you that much closer in getting better.

Sometimes, we get stressed when everything happens all at once. Instead of taking it out on someone else a person should take a deep breathe and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get your mind off of the problem. A person could take a walk, listen to some music, read the newspaper or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things. This mental timeout can help you refocus on your current situation.

A good way to manage your worry is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking. When encountering thoughts that make your fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.

When facing a current or upcoming task that overwhelms you with a lot of anxiety, the first thing you can do is to break the task into a series of smaller steps. Completing these smaller tasks one at a time will make the stress more manageable and increases your chances of success.

As a Layman and not as a professional, I realize it is not easy to deal with all of our fears and other problems, however there are all kinds of help available. Remember to take advantage of the help that is around you. The key is to be patient and not to give up. In time, you will be able to find those resources that will help you with your problems.

What Are Structured Settlements ?

When someone has won a structured settlement that has arisen from a lawsuit, they expect they will have to wait a year or more just to receive the money, this is not true. There are many companies available to you that exist to purchase your settlement from you. These types of companies will pay you cash in exchange for the structured settlement or any portions of your periodic settlement that is remaining. What does this mean for you? Well this essentially means that you will receive a lump sum payment from the company who will purchase your structured settlement and have the ability to use it for anything they desire rather it be paying for college, purchasing a new home, paying off debts, investing into the future, anything you desire.

Generally, a structured settlement is the result of a lawsuit, this is an agreement made between you and the responsible party that you will accept specified payments from them in a specified period of time, as a result you will release them of any liability named in your lawsuit. There are a variety of payment methods you can choose from such as annual installments that come over several years or in payouts that come every few years. Other types of structured settlements include winnings from situations where the awards are of a substantial amount such as contests or lotteries.

Structured settlements are tax-free and used to provide financial security over the long term; however, many people choose to sell their settlement in order to gain the money right away. You have many options when it comes to selling your settlement, you can sell as little or as much as you want and fits your needs and wants. This is an option that many people take advantage of when they have receive a structured settlement of any type. They often like the advantage of having all the monies right away instead of having to wait years and years, which could hinder any plans of purchasing large ticket items such a home. Sometimes the payments will not be large enough to make any sort of significant investment without the need of saving for several years. This is where selling your structured settlement to a reputable company that has a high track record and solid integrity will do some good.

It’s All Up To You

Well, folks, we’ve made it to the end of the year and what a ride it has been. 2005 was a great year for me personally and professionally. I saw my business grow almost as fast as my kids. Both gave me great joy and just enough trouble to keep me on my toes.

I heard from people this year who were making tremendous progress building their eBay and online businesses and I heard from others who were just getting started.

I heard from people who were thriving and I heard from others who were struggling.

I heard from some who were making thousands of dollars a month and others who were fighting to pay the bills.

Some people asked for my advice.

Some people asked for my money.

Some damned me because I am successful and they are not.

My message to them all was the same:

It’s not up to ME. It’s all up to YOU.

YOU Have To Keep Moving Forward

In business as in life, you must keep moving forward to be a success. You must have goals and you must have a plan. There is no such thing as an “idle success.” Successful people are not satisfied to just stay in one place. They are not satisfied with what they have. They know that when you become satisfied with what you have, you will always have just that. Successful people are always looking toward the future and moving forward.

YOU Must Never Give Up

When life knocks you down it’s easy to wallow in your own sorrow. Life becomes a pity party and you are the star. Finding a successful wallower is like trying to find Bigfoot: there is no such thing. When you fall off the horse, get back on. When life knocks you down, you have to get back up. In the words of my friend, comedian Ron White, “When life gives you lemons find someone life has given tequila and have a party.” Never, ever give up.

YOU Can’t Let Your Circumstances Dictate Your Outcome

At one time I was dead broke and working 3 jobs just to survive. I was living on coffee and cigarettes and sleeping 3 hours a night. It would have been very easy for me to let my circumstances get the best of me, but I refused to give up. I set goals for myself. I created a plan. I took action that would get me out of those circumstances, not keep me there.

Only YOU Can Truly Motivate YOU

The only person who can motivate YOU to take the action necessary to be a success is YOU. Too many people are looking to others for motivation when only self-motivation really works in the long term. When you were a kid your mother motivated you to get out of bed and go to school and make good grades and come home on time. Well, you’re a grown up now and you have to be your own motivator. You have to make yourself take action. You must have the drive and determination to do things on your own. Without motivation and action, you will fail and it will be your own fault.

No One Can Do It For YOU

The only person who can make YOU a success is YOU. Others can provide you with advice and tools to help make your journey more fruitful, but in the end it is up to YOU to make YOU a success. It is up to YOU to start your business and learn to market your product. It is up to YOU to make sales and carry the money to the bank. If YOU won’t do it for yourself, no one can do it for you.

YOU Make Your Own Luck

Finally, remember this: there is no such thing as luck. YOU make your own luck. Luck occurs when opportunity and action collide. So if you’re waiting for Ed McMahon to show up on your doorstep and proclaim, “This is your lucky day!” you are going to have a long, miserable wait.

Ed can’t make you a success.

I can’t make you a success.

It is all up to YOU.

Now get off the couch and make 2006 a Great Year!

How to Expand your Business by Leaps and Bounds

If you are reading this article then it is safe to assume that you want to expand your business by leaps and bounds. A great way to strengthen your business is to write a book and sell it. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, writing a book may be the easiest step for you because selling your book requires knowing special promotion techniques geared towards your book. Lets look at different ways you can promote and sell your book that have proven successful for many entrepreneurs just like yourself.

First, set your book up to be a lead generator. An increase in leads will allow you to expand your business by leaps and bounds. When you sell your book, collect the name and contact information from your customers. This begins the relationship with your customers and increases your quality mailing list. You can send free items, such as bonus reports and CDs, to entice your customer to purchase more products.

Second, your book should have your website and contact information in it. Encourage the customers to visit your website for free information. At your website you can capture their personal information on a power squeeze page. Customers can also recommend your book and website to friends, family, and colleagues.

Third, you can work with a promoter to round up mailing lists and sky rocket your sales ranking on Amazon.com. Not only can you receive new leads, but your partners will also benefit from the partnership. New leads can lead to several lucrative deals in the future. In essence, everyone in the partnership wins.

Fourth, check out Amazon.com on a daily basis as they add new features. You need to keep up-to-date on any new Amazon features that may help you sell your book. Other ideas to help promote your book include finding people that will interview you as an author. They will then provide you with a CD. You can send this CD to customers who have purchased your book or offer it as a free bonus with your book.

Lastly, dont forget that you will need a media kit. A media kit should include your biographical information, picture of book or actual book, and contact information at a minimum.

Office Chair

An office chair is a type of furniture that is designed to help employees sit in a single location for extended periods of time. Many office chairs can swivel, and this will allow the workers to reach different places without having to get up. The seat of these chairs will conform to the shape of those who sit in it, and they will often have armrests and backing to support the spines of those who sit in them. The goal of an office chair was to make the worker feel comfortable so that they could concentrate on performing various tasks. Because of the environment, the chairs that were used by executives differed from the employees.

Traditionally, office chairs that were designed for executives did not have the ability to swivel, and this showed that the executive had no need to move into multiple places, and could reside in a single position. Over time, the executive office chair became large, and many of them also featured closed arms, and are made with luxurious materials. Most executives today have office chairs that are large and elaborate. While office chairs were first designed in the 19th century, it wasn’t until the 1970s when ergonomics was used in their design.

Because those sitting in chairs for extended periods of time would experience back pain, an emphasis was placed on designing chairs that would be as comfortable as possible, and would prevent those sitting in them from getting stress injuries. This led to office chairs that were adjustable in many ways. A person of a different height or size could adjust the chair in a way that fits them. The best contemporary office chairs can be adjusted to fit a person of virtually any size. Despite this, sitting down in any chair for extended periods of time will bring stress to the back. Even those who sit in the best chairs will want to get up and move around once every 30 minutes.

People who spend lots of time sitting in an office will want to make sure they purchase the correct chair. While being cheap with other forms of office furniture is generally not a problem, you should want to invest money in a good chair that will bring comfort to your back. Using office chairs which are ergonomic can help you avoid back problems. The best office chairs are those which offer support to your lower back. There are hundreds of office chairs available on the market, and no one chair is considered to be the best, even if it is the most expensive. In addition to back support, a good office chair should have an excellent amount of depth. The standard depth for office chairs is a maximum of 20 inches.

The height of the seat is also important. For most people a height about 16 to 20 inches is usually sufficient. This is a height which should allow you to rest both of your feet flat on the floor. It is also important for office chairs to support your lower back, because chairs that don’t support the lower backs of those who site in them will cause them to slouch, and this will add even more stress to their lower backs.

Nuclear Panhandling; North Korea And Iran Seek To Trade Threats Of Oblivion For Alms

Remember nuclear blackmail? Apparently, North Korea and Iran have refined the practice into outright panhandling. Lets indulge, with a not entirely charitable examination, this new and nettlesome version of Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?

Standing on the most conspicuous street corners the two beggarly brats can manage in our minds, they proffer their illicit cups in quest of alms, while they wiggle their nascent nuclear capabilities at our noses.

North Korea plays What The Hecks Bad Boy and launches seven missiles obviously calculated to fly in the face of the civilized worlds most anxious hand-wringing, and Iran continues to enrich uranium while European negotiators heap ever more incentives into its cynically proffered tin.

How deserving are these increasingly irksome beggars?

North Korea has the thorny problem of watching its Asian neighbors ascend ever more successfully in the worlds economic stratosphere while its own economy rumbles along in a decrepit cart composed of dusty economic lumber that has long since proven to be inherently impoverishing. So it finds itself in desperate and really quite incriminating need of mere sustenance.

Meanwhile, Irans economy skids along via the oil beneath its sacred sand, with a little bit of help from the remnants of its Caspian caviar trade, but the mullahdom is hardly a candidate to join the ranks of the worlds most industrialized nations. The theocracy does, in fact, have an irritating unemployment problem, particularly among its perhaps not eternally submissive young people.

Apparently, modernity at the enterprising level does not inspirit the ever-turbaned fundamentalist as it might a more enlightened and lax attendee at the local mosque. So, despite the bountiful blessings that might be expected by placing themselves under the rule of its most pious adherents of Mohammed, the citizenry finds itself less than abundantly heaped with earthbound rewards. All the better for its wily leaders to distract them with flattering flights of unfounded egomania, especially since the distraction can elicit a plentitude of salving alms for oblivion.

Obviously, their nuclear capabilities pose a very unlikely threat. Unleashing even the worst they could ever manage would only invite the worlds more capably arrayed nuclear powers to incinerate an unacceptable proportion of their citizenry and infrastructure.

Given that their weapon wagging is ultimately a farcical pretense, will dropping a heartfelt gift in their cups get them off the street or encourage them to return again?

We think the latter. Then what else might we do as a substitute for giving into their clamorous demands for a spare dime.

Since institutionalization is more applicable to mentally defective individuals and arrest to overly intrusive ones, are there doable equivalents to rein in international panhanders?

As a ready substitute for institutionalization, we suggest letting the pretenders stew in their own waywardness by ignoring them. There is nothing they can do but brandish their weapons until they grow weary of the tactic and turn to more responsible means of support.

And, as the equivalent of arrest, we can lock them away with sanctions that fit the crimes until they realize that their new form of connivance just doesnt pay but, in fact, results in making their unfortunate lots even more discouraging to them and their disciples.

So, while civilized nations tend to mix tenderheartedness with wariness, we really just need to steel ourselves and walk on by this duplicitous duo of irresponsible funraisers.

Why Deep breathing is essential for us

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:15 pm

Deep breathing means – Adopting a habit of breathing deeply.

From your nostril not from your mouth. That’s it !

Normally most people ( i.e. almost 95 % of all of us) who are leading a sedentary life style and working on jobs that requires ‘using their heads’ all day long, the outcome of a busy, complex and demanding life is somewhat like this:

No energy in the end of the day, mental sluggishness, dilapidated bodies, greater susceptibility to germ and infections, wear-and-tear of the entire body, more work for the heart, irregular blood pressure, tensions in body and nerves etc.

Remember this important fact:

To function properly, our brain needs three times more oxygen than the rest of our organs; and unless this is provided it will try to appropriate its supply by drawing on the over-all allotment!

This explains why so many city people, working at sedentary jobs, doing mental work all day long, tend to become dilapidated and have greater susceptibility to germ and infections than persons who lead active outdoor lives. Sedentary individuals are permanently oxygen-starved. Yet this situation can be avoided at will.

Air is nourishment to our bodies just as much as food and drink. Air gives our blood the supply of oxygen it must have in order to feed itself so that it may, in turn, feed the tissues, nerves, glands and vital organs. Without it our skin, bones, teeth and hair could not remain in condition. Our digestion-the process of utilizing the food we eat-fails at once without a proper supply of oxygen to the blood. Even our thinking processes are slowed down without intake and exhalation of fresh air-which is the reason mental sluggishness overtakes us in an ill-ventilated room

In a single day we breath about 23,000 times. The average volumes of air taken in with a single breath is about 20 cubic inches, depending on a person’s size, sex, posture, the nature of the surrounding atmosphere and one’s physical and emotional state. However, with proper attention given to the breathing, this volume may be increased to 100 or even 130 cubic inches per breath.

Breathing is an activity which is indispensable for our existence. Nobody can live without breathing as the oxygen is the life blood of all organisms on earth.

However, most of us breath in a shallow manner. The inhalation and exhalation of air in and out of body occurs on a very superficial level in most of us. People just dont care to inhale deeply since they don’t find any compulsive urge to do so.

Though not breathing deeply does not harm us directly, it has its own long term negative effects on our body.

Let us understand what happens when we do not adopt correct breathing:

As the average person reaches middle age, lung tissues tend to grow less and less elastic. Years of improper breathing take their toll. The chest itself has a tendency to grow rigid The consequences is an accumulation of uric acid in the blood stream which often leads to those vague syndromes of pain and discomfort that doctors in general diagnose with a shrug as the miseries of aging, which they can cheerfully advise you to learn to live with since nothing can be done about them.

Backaches, headaches, stiffening muscles and joints, neuritis, rheumatism are some of the more common of these complaints. Excess fat is another, for as we begin to grow old and proper circulation is impeded by a sluggish diaphragm or hardening arteries, the red blood corpuscles become distributed unevenly and fat accumulates in spots instead of being burned up.

However, all of these complaints may be avoided, or at least considerably retarded, if only we learn to breath scientifically. Deep breathing (along with Deep Contraction) also has a direct salutary effect on Obesity, Since the cleansing, stimulating action of deep breathing improves metabolism and that, in turn, transforms deposits of fat into body fuel, or added energy.

In other words,

“Careful reorientation of your breathing habits can provide you with 5 times the oxygen and rid you of five times the carbon dioxide, with which you habitually function.”

Just incorporate a habit of deep breathing in your busy, complex and demanding life and all the above negative outcomes of it will vanish like a magic !

The Greatest Gift

“Go ahead, Judy, talk to your father. What do you want to say?” With these words offered by my favorite Aunt Mimi, I was given the greatest giftthe gift of myself.

Mimi and I had gone on an aunt-niece shopping adventure, and at age 15, I became the proud owner of my first mini-skirt. Upon seeing it, my dad hit the roof, and as usual, I was angry, scared, and tongue-tied. Years of admonitions to not “talk back,” had my voice stopped in my throat.

Before that moment, I believe I didn’t know that I could have wishes of my own, schooled as I was in pleasing others. How could I speak my thoughts if I didn’t know I had them? But with Mimi at my side, I was emboldened. I had an ally. And I found words.

I opened my mouth and talked to my father. I don’t remember exactly what I said – it’s not important anyway. What’s important is that I talked to him. I found my self – my sense of authority over what I wanted to wear and why, my feelings in that moment, and the quiet power that comes with the acknowledgment of these things.

Every time words get stuck in my throat, that moment comes to me, and I think: “Judy, what do you want to say?” And I find my self, and the words come.

This was the greatest gift I ever received from another human being. And it was a gift I could share with my father. As I found the weight of my own convictions, I was able to communicate with him in a new way – not to hurt, retaliate, prove a point, or to show him how wrong he was, but to remove a barrier and let him see a part of me I’d not ventured to show before. It was a gift to both of us.

In the spirit of giving, what will you give yourself and your relationships? Is there a “stuckness” somewhere that could be freed up by finding your center and communicating in a new way with someone you love? Are you hiding? Or are you expecting someone to guess your feelings? Give them and yourself the greatest gift.

The Truth About Refurbished Electronics

We all prefer to purchase new when it comes to, well, just about everything. Unfortunately, though, the luxury of buying a brand new item is something that we are simply not afforded at all times. There are a variety of reasons why, in some instances, we are resigned to purchase used rather than new; money and accessibility being the most obvious points. However, there can be a positive avenue to this, which is, of course, the ability to save money by purchasing a less than new product. And, the benefits of purchasing refurbished items are no more prevalent than they are in the field of refurbished electronics.

The Economies of the Middle East

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:03 pm

On February 24, 2003, in the Islamic Financial Forum in Dubai, Brad Bourland, chief economist for the Saudi American Bank (SAMBA), breached the embarrassed silence that invariably enshrouds speakers in Middle Eastern get-togethers. He reminded the assembled that despite the decades-long fortuity of opulent oil revenues, the nations of the region – excluding Turkey and Israel – failed to reform their economies, let alone prosper.

Structural weaknesses, imperceptible growth, crippling unemployment and deteriorating government financing confined Arab states to the role of oil-addicted minions. At $540 billion, said Bourland, quoted by Middle East Online, the combined gross domestic product of all the Arab countries is smaller than Mexico’s (or Spain’s, adds The Economist).

According to the Arab League, the gross national product of all its members amounted to $712 billion or 2 percent of the world’s GNP in 2001 – merely double sub-Saharan Africa’s.

Even the recent tripling of the price of oil – their main export commodity – did not generate sustained growth equal to the burgeoning population and labor force. Algeria’s official unemployment rate is 26.4 percent, Oman’s 17.2 percent, Tunisia’s 15.6 percent, Jordan’s 14.4 percent, Saudi Arabia’s 13 percent and Kuwait sports an unhealthy 7.1 percent. Even with 8 percent out of work, Egypt needs to grow by 6 percent annually just to stay put, estimates the World Bank.

But the real figures are way higher. At least one fifth of the Saudi and Egyptian labor forces go unemployed. Only one tenth of Saudi women have ever worked. The region’s population has almost doubled in the last quarter century, to 300 million people. Close to two fifths of the denizens of the Arab world are minors.

According to the Iranian news agency, IRNA, the European Commission on the Mediterranean Region estimates that the purchasing power parity income per head in the area is a mere 39 percent of the EU’s 2001 average, comparable to many post-communist countries in transition. In nominal terms the figure is 28 percent. These statistics include Israel whose income per capita equals 84 percent of the EU’s and the Palestinian Authority where GDP fell by 10 percent in 2000 and by another 15 percent the year after.

Faced with ominously surging social unrest, the Arab regimes – all of them lacking in democratic legitimacy – resort to ever more desperate measures. “Saudisation”, for instance, amounts to the expulsion of 3 million foreign laborers to make room for indigenous idlers reluctant to take on these vacated – mostly menial – jobs. About one million, typically Western, expat experts remain untouched.

The national accounts of Arab polities are in tatters. Until the recent surge in oil prices, Saudi Arabia managed to produce a budget surplus only once since 1982. Per capita income in the kingdom plunged from $26,000 in 1981 to $7000 in 2003. Higher oil prices may well continue throughout 2006, further masking the calamitous state of the region’s economies. But this would amount to merely postponing the inevitable.

Arab countries are not integrated into the world economy. It is possibly the only part of the globe, bar Africa, to have entirely missed the trains of globalization and technological progress. Charlene Barshefsky was United States Trade Representative from 1997 to 2001. In February 2003, in a column published by the New York Times, she noted that:

“Muslim countries in the region trade less with one another than do African countries, and much less than do Asian, Latin American or European countries. This reflects both high trade barriers … and the deep isolation Iran, Iraq and Libya have brought on themselves through violence and support for terrorist groups … The Middle East still depends on oil. Today, the United States imports slightly more than $5 billion worth of manufactured goods and farm products from the 22 members of the Arab League, Afghanistan and Iran combined – or about half our value-added imports from Hong Kong alone.”

Indeed, Jewish Israel and secular Turkey aside, 8 of the 11 largest economies of the Middle East have yet to join the World Trade Organization. Only two decades ago, one of every seven dollars in global export revenues and one twentieth of the world’s foreign direct investment flowed to Arab pockets.

Today, the Middle East’s share of international trade and FDI is less than 1.5 percent – half of it with the European Union. Medium size economies such as Sweden’s attract more capital than the entire Middle Eastern Moslem world put together.

Some Arab countries periodically go through spastic reforms only to submerge once more in backwardness and venality. Oil-producers attempted some structural economic adjustments in the 1990s. Jordan and Syria privatized a few marginal state-owned enterprises. Iran and Iraq cut subsidies. Almost everyone – especially Lebanon, Egypt, Iran and Jordan – increased their unhealthy reliance on multilateral loans and foreign aid.

Young King Abdullah II of Jordan, for instance, dabbles in deregulation, liberalization, tax reform, cutting red tape and tariff reductions. Aided by a free trade agreement with America passed by Congress in 2001, Jordan’s exports to the United States last year soared from $16 million in 1998 to $400 million in 2002.

A similar nostrum is being administered to Morocco, partly to spite the European Union and its glacial “Barcelona Process” Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. But, as everyone realizes, the region’s problems run deeper than any tweaking of the customs code.

The “Arab Human Development Report 2002″, published in June 2002 by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), was composed entirely by Arab scholars. It charts the predictably dismal landscape: one in five inhabitants survives on less than $2 a day; annual growth in income per capita over the last 20 years, at 0.5 percent, exceeded only sub-Saharan Africa’s; one in six is unemployed.

The region’s three “deficits”, laments the report, are freedom, knowledge and manpower. Arab polities and societies are autocratic and intolerant. Illiteracy is still rampant and education poor. Women – half the workforce – are ill-treated and excluded. Pervasive Islamization replaced earlier militant ideologies in stifling creativity and growth.

In an article titled “Middle East Economies: A Survey of Current Problems and Issues”, published in the September 1999 issue of the Middle East Review of International Affairs, Ali Abootalebi, assistant professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, concluded:

“The Middle East is second only to Africa as the least developed region in the world. It has already lost much of its strategic importance since the Soviet Union’s demise … Most Middle Eastern states … probably do, possess the necessary technocratic and professional personnel to run state affairs in an efficient and modern manner …. (but not) the willingness or ability of the elites in charge to disengage the old coalitional interests that dominate governments in these countries.”

The war with Iraq changed all that. This was the fervent hope of intellectuals throughout the region, even those viscerally opposed to America’s high-handed hegemony. But this may well be only another false dawn in many. The inevitable massive postwar damage to the area’s fragile economies will spawn added oppression rather than enhance democracy.

According to The Economist, the military buildup has already injected $2 billion into Kuwait’s economy, equal to 6 percent of its GDP. Prices of everything – from real estate to cars – are rising fast. The stock exchange index has soared by one third. American largesse extends to Turkey – the recipient of $5 billion in grants, $1 billion in oil and $10 billion in loan guarantees. Egypt and Jordan will reap $1 billion apiece and, possibly, subsidized Saudi oil as well. Israel will abscond with $8 billion in collateral and billions in cash.

But the party may be short-lived, especially since the war did not prove to be as decisive and nippy as the Americans foresaw.

Stratfor, the strategic forecasting consultancy, correctly observes that the United States is likely to encourage American oil companies to boost Iraq’s postbellum production. With Venezuela back on line and global tensions eased, deteriorating crude prices may adversely affect oil-dependent countries from Iran to Algeria.

The resulting social and political unrest – coupled with violent, though typically impotent, protests against the war, America and the political leadership – is unlikely to convince panicky tottering regimes to offer greater political openness and participatory democracy. The mock presidential elections in Egypt in 2005 are a case in point.

War also traumatized tourism, another major regional foreign exchange earner. Egypt alone collects $4 billion a year from eager pyramid-gazers – about one ninth of its GDP. Add to that the effects of armed conflict on traffic in the Suez Canal, on investments and on expat remittances – and the country could well become the war’s greatest victim.

In a recent economic conference of the Arab League, then Egyptian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Faiza Abu el-Naga, pegged the immediate losses to her country at $6-8 billion. More than 200,000 jobs were lost in tourism alone. Egypt’s Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) distributed a study predicting $900 million in damages to the Jordanian economy and billions more to be incurred by oil-rich Saudi Arabia.

The Arab Bank Federation foresees banking losses of up to $60 billion due to contraction in economic activity both during the war and in its aftermath. This may be too pessimistic. But even the optimists talk about $30 billion in foregone revenues. The reconstruction of Iraq could revitalize the sector – but American and European banks will probably monopolize the lucrative opportunity.

The war, and more so its protracted aftermath, are likely to have a stultifying effect on the investment climate.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt each attract around $1 billion a year in foreign direct investment – double Iran’s rising rate. But global FDI was halved between 2000-2002. In 2003, flows reverted merely to 1998 levels. This implosion is likely to affect even increasingly attractive or resurgent destinations such as Israel, Turkey, Iraq and Iran.

Foreign investors will be deterred not only by the fighting but also by a mounting wave of virulent – and increasingly violent – xenophobia. Consumer boycotts are a traditional weapon in the Arab political arsenal. Coca-Cola’s sales in these parched lands have plummeted by 10 percent in 2002 alone. Pepsi’s overseas sales flattened due to Arabs shunning its elixirs. American-franchised fast food outlets saw their business halved. McDonald’s had to close some of its restaurants in Jordan.

Foreign business premises have been vandalized even in the Gulf countries. According to The Economist “in the past year (2002) overall business at western fast-food and drinks firms has dropped by 40% in Arab countries. Trade in American branded goods has shrunk by a quarter.”

These are bad news. Multinationals are sizable employers. Coca-Cola alone is responsible for 220,000 jobs in the Middle East. Procter & Gamble invested $100 million in Egypt. Foreign enterprises pay well and transfer technology and management skills to their local joint venture partners.

Nor is foreign involvement confined to retail. The $35 billion Middle Eastern petrochemicals sector is reliant on the kindness of strangers: Indian, Canadian, South Korean and, lately, Chinese. Singapore and Malaysia are eyeing the tourism industry, especially in the Gulf. Their withdrawal from the indigenous economies might prove disastrous.

Nor will these battered nations be saved by geopolitical benefactors.

The economies of the Middle East are off the radar screen of the Bush administration, accuses Edward Gresser of the Progressive Policy Institute in a recently published report titled “Blank Spot on the Map: How Trade Policy is Working Against the War on Terror”.

Egypt and most other Moslem countries are heavily dependent on their textile and agricultural exports to the West. But, by 2015, they will face tough competition from nations with contractual trade advantages granted them by the United States, goes the author.

Still, the fault is shared by entrenched economic interest groups in the Middle East . Petrified by the daunting prospect of reforms and the ensuing competitive environment, they block free trade, liberalization and deregulation.

Consider the Persian Gulf, a corner of the world which subsists on trading with partners overseas.

Not surprisingly, most of the members of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council have joined the World Trade Organization a while back. But their citizens are unlikely to enjoy the benefits at least until 2010 due to obstruction by the club’s all-powerful and tentacular business families, international bankers and economists told the Times of Oman.

The rigidity and malignant self-centeredness of the political and economic elite and the confluence of oppression and profiteering are the crux of the region’s problems. No external shock – not even war in Iraq – comes close to having the same pernicious and prolonged effects.
